JDW WAS BORN IN YORKSHIRE, BUT SPENT HIS LAST YEARS IN CONWY, OFTEN STAYING IN THE CASTLE HOTEL.
It is said that he lived in the hotel which was owned by Mrs Dutton-Foreshaw at that time and much of his work can be seen around the hotel. It is alleged he had a certain ‘affection’ for Mrs D-F and ‘paid’ for his lodgings with his artwork! He was also very involved in giving the front of the hotel a ‘facelift’ in 1880, by designing the Victorian face of the hotel, using local flint chips and Ruabon brick, instead of the original rendered front (which would have been similar to that seen on Plas Mawr, across the street). He passed away in Conwy on the 3rd January, 1892 and is buried in a local cemetery.
