History of Afternoon Tea

Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is widely understood to have been been the driving force behind afternoon tea in the 1840’s. She is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. It was common at that time for people to take only two main meals a day, breakfast in the morning, and dinner at around 8 o’clock in the evening. The Duchess’ solution was a pot a tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon. This quickly became a treat with her friends and developed into a social event.

Our delicious Limited Edition Afternoon Tea’s are available 7 days a week, between 12pm and 6pm.

A quick summary to whet your appetite

The most visible historical features of The Castle Hotel, High Street, Conwy, are its striking façade and its extensive collection of Victorian artwork. But guests will also be intrigued by the hotel’s associations with the three adjacent bridges over the River Conwy. Thomas Telford’s splendid suspension bridge was opened in 1826, just a year after The Castle Hotel had been doubled in size in anticipation of an increase in coaches travelling from Chester to Holyhead.

The second bridge – a revolutionary tubular construction – was built in 1848 and brought the railway to the town. As with Telford’s bridge, a celebratory dinner to mark its completion was held at The Castle Hotel, where on this occasion the guests of honour were the bridge designer and famed railway engineer Robert Stephenson together with his even-more-famous father, George Stephenson, the so-called ‘Father of the Railways’. In 1955, the Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, John Boyd Carpenter, was guest of honour for a lunch at The Castle Hotel to celebrate work starting on the third bridge – a new road crossing.
The Castle Hotel has attracted many distinguished visitors, none more so than in 1832 when hosts Samuel and Cordelia Owen were honoured to serve lunch to the heir presumptive to the throne, the 13-year-old Princess Victoria. Together with her mother, the glamorous Duchess of Kent, she was on a day-trip to the town as part of an extended summer visit to North Wales.

The letter D carved in stone high above the portico of The Castle Hotel commemorates the ownership of Miss Sarah Dutton, from the late 1860s until her death, aged 84, in 1920. In the 1890s she commissioned the famous Chester architect John Douglas to create a new façade for the building in the neo-Jacobean style we see today, and she also commissioned the artists Buckley Ousey and John Dawson Watson to produce the many works that still adorn the interior.
